Ferd lives on the very small planet of Smyrd, with his very small friend Curd. Ferd and Curd are Bright Birds ( Birdus brightianus ). They have small oddly shaped heads, almost like angular suns, and gigantic brightly colored b eaks. With their tiny, round bodies and yellow feet, they look positively cheerful.

Ferd and Curd are employed by Smyrd and it's surrounding nations to use what they call their ' Bright ' powers. All bright birds have derd lights that glow so bright they are like living lighthouses. Derd lights sit in the bird's stomachs and can be swithched on and off on command. Only bright birds have these derds.

Bright birds are very rare, only three or four per planet outside the milky way. Ferd and Curd are the only Bright birds on Smyrd.
